The Client’s Challenge
The homeowner wanted the cable route from the consumer unit to the EV charger to be completely hidden, ideally routed beneath the floorboards via the understairs cupboard. This approach would have kept all cabling fully concealed and out of sight.
However, once on site, it became clear that this route wasn’t possible due to structural constraints. A new solution had to be designed on the day, requiring careful consideration to maintain the client’s priority for a neat, discreet finish while ensuring the installation remained fully compliant and safe.
Our Solution
Rather than compromising on appearance or safety, we worked with the client to identify an alternative route that still achieved a clean and unobtrusive result.
The revised design involved routing the cabling discreetly through cupboards using PVC trunking to conceal the 6 mm twin-and-earth and CAT 6 data cable, leading to an external junction box. From there, steel wire armoured (SWA) cable was taken down at low level alongside a gutter pipe and buried underground before entering the charger from below.
This approach ensured durability, protection, and minimal visual impact, while allowing the installation to proceed without structural alteration to the property.
Installation & Delivery
The electricity supply was safely isolated before installing a new metal consumer unit complete with surge protection. A dedicated 40A bi-directional RCBO was installed to supply the EV charger circuit.
A new radial supply was then installed from the additional consumer unit to feed a wall-mounted EV charger positioned on the left-hand side of the porch area, as agreed with the homeowner.
Despite the revised cable route requiring additional materials and time, the team adjusted the schedule and completed the installation on the same visit. The charger was fully tested and commissioned to confirm safe and reliable operation.
The Outcome
The homeowner now has a fully compliant, professionally installed Andersen A2 EV charger, positioned exactly where they wanted it.
Although a longer cable route was required, the finished result remains neat, discreet, and durable, with all cabling carefully concealed or protected. Most importantly, the installation was completed safely, tested thoroughly, and handed over in full working order.
