BG Sync EV Charger – (June)
Job: To supply and install a new radial supply from consumer unit, feeding a new BG SyncEV socket charger 7.4kW.
Skills: 18th Edition Wiring Regulations, IET COP for EV Charging, NICEIC, ECA
The Client’s Challenge
The homeowner had recently installed a solar PV system and wanted to make the most of their self-generated energy by integrating an EV charger. Their priority was to reduce running costs by charging their vehicle using surplus solar power, while still retaining the flexibility to charge from the grid when required.
They were also keen to ensure the installation was safe, compliant, and easy to manage through a smart app, without unnecessary complexity.
Our Solution
To meet these requirements, we recommended the BG Sync EV charger, a smart charger well suited to solar-integrated installations.
The Sync Energy chargers offers Auto Solar Charging, allowing the vehicle to charge using excess solar generation, alongside Tariff Sense smart charging to take advantage of cheaper off-peak electricity when solar power isn’t available. The charger also features integrated open PEN conductor protection, meaning no additional earth rod was required.
For ease of use and monitoring, the system was configured to work seamlessly with the Sync Energy app giving the client full control over scheduling, usage tracking, and solar-led charging.
Installation & Delivery
To support the new charger safely, the mains supply was isolated and a new metal consumer unit was installed, complete with surge protection and a dedicated Type A RCBO for the EV charger circuit.
The charger was positioned next to the front door, as requested by the homeowner. Cabling was routed neatly through the external wall alongside the existing solar cabling before being clipped discreetly around to the front of the property, keeping the installation tidy and consistent with the existing system.
Once installed, the charger was fully commissioned and tested, including verification of correct operation in both standard charging and solar-charging modes.
The Outcome
The homeowner now benefits from a smart EV charging solution that works in harmony with their solar PV system.
They can charge their vehicle using surplus solar energy whenever available, significantly reducing reliance on grid electricity, while still having the option to schedule charging during cheaper off-peak periods. The result is a flexible, efficient, and future-proof charging setup that maximises the value of their solar investment.
Client Feedback
The client was very pleased with the overall installation and particularly commented on the neatness of the work and how seamlessly the charger integrates with their existing solar system.
